Tile Roofing
Tile roofs are beautiful and long lasting. They are also expensive and heavy, but what do you want from a roofing material that can last 100 years? Traditionally, most roofing tiles were made from slate or a fired clay or terra cotta product, but today's roofing titles are very often made from molded, tinted concrete. Roofing tiles can come in many shapes: curved, flat, fluted, or interlocking, and in many styles.
Flat Deck: TPO or EPDM Roofing
TPO Roofing Membrane: TPO, short for thermoplastic polyolefin, is a single-ply thermoplastic roofing membrane that offers good overall performance and great energy efficiency for the money. TPO membrane chemically bonds rubber, ethylene, and propylene, as well as numerous filler materials. In that sense, it’s somewhat closer to EPDM rubber than PVC, although, unlike EPDM, TPO membranes seams are hot-air welded (not glued at the seams).
EPDM, short for Ethylene Propylene Diene Terpolymer, is a rubber roofing membrane that is commonly installed on low sloped residential and commercial roofs. It’s considered a low-cost alternative to PVC and TPO roofs. EPDM membranes install like a giant sticker, but this must be done slowly and with precision to avoid air bubbles.
Wood Shingle Roof or Shake Sidewall
If you have a traditional or historical style-home, a cedar shingle roof will increase its aesthetic appeal, creating a more natural look that weathers to a beautiful silvery-gray.
Due to risk of fire, cedar roofing has declined in popularity, but newer cedar shingles and cedar shakes are now treated with fire retardant, making them a safer option. Cedar shingle roofs are also a great option for high wind areas and for roofs with a steep pitch.
The lifespan of your cedar shingle roof is highly variable however, if well maintained you can expect to get at least 20 to 25 years. Beyond its unique aesthetic appeal, one of the primary benefits of a cedar shingle roof is its relatively low weight compared to other roofing materials.
